Learning how to hold the yarn correctly is important in learning how to knit.. The yarn is wrapped around the little finger and ends up over the index finger.

This allows the index finger to control the yarn to work the stitches and the other fingers, in particular the little finger, to control yarn tension, which is necessary to achieve a neat and even, finished knitted fabric.

It may feel awkward at first but is worth trying from scratch like this as it will prevent problems like baggy stitches particularly at the ends of rows. However, I don't insist that beginners use this method but you can come back to this tutorial later when you have mastered the basics and want to improve your techniques.
