There are only two basic stitches in knitting - knit stitch and purl stitch - on which all knitting is based.  You need to master the knit stitch before moving on to purl stitch: the knit stitch can be used on its own to create the simplest of knitted fabrics, but purl stitch is only ever used in combination with knit stitch. Practise these basic stitches, and then go to the Project Ideas section  to complete your first real knitting project.

Knit Stitch

Knit Stitch is the first basic stitch. Practise and master this basic stitch before moving on to the Purl Stitch.

Purl Stitch

Purl Stitch is the second basic stitch.  Purl Stitch is always used in combination with Knit Stitches so you need to learn the Knit Stitch first before you can move on to the projects using Purl Stitches.

Now that you have learnt the two basic stitches, learn how to knit with them in the same row to make commonly used stitch patterns, and also as a foundation to progress from the skills you will learn in this tutorial.
